Forty Years of the Computer Mouse- Will There be Forty More?

Perhaps your phone or your car keys come in first as to an object you pick up most in your life, but second may be in fact, your computer mouse. Unplug your mouse or take out the batteries. Take a minute and try to activate anything on your computer with out the mouse. It’s pretty difficult isn’t it? The invention of the Computer Mouse has been pretty revolutionary and so many computer mouse designs have been created and marketed as the next go-to gadget.

Computer Mouse Designs- The Good and the Bad

Sure the computer mouse function has stayed the same- direct access into a computer, but designs from one enormous button to teeny computer mice to large joy-stick like models have changed drastically. Some popular computer mouse models:

•    Finger mouse

•    Joy Stick

•    Rolling Ball- trackball mouse

•    Ergonomic mouse

•    Touch pad

Will the computer mouse be around for another 40 years? Technology geeks think not. The computer mouse is ready for retirement and touch screens are taking over. If you use a laptop with a track pad or a touch pad for a computer mouse pad, you will already have been practicing for the touch screen revolution.

No-doubt you have used a touch screen already, maybe in fact, several times today- be it at the bank atm, grocery store checkout or perhaps you work in an industry that uses touch screen technology for a point of service to enter in information, like at a restaurant or auto shop. The iconic Apple iPhone, no doubt is the start of touch screen phenomenon, although touch screen technology has been around since the 60s. Now that more everyday objects are beginning to have touch screens, the cost of the technology is decreasing, allowing for more advances in touch screens. For example, the Microsoft touch screen coffee table “Surface”, allows people to grab and pull images, text and other functions has quickly become top buzz, if you have seen the most recent James Bond, then you will know what I am talking about.

Some people argue that the human hand is far too clumsy, and for some people, using touch technology is not working for them, they need more than a glass or plastic screen to push. So what’s next?

The Computer Mouse is “so last year,” and touch screens are becoming the norm. So what is next? Well, motion detection technology and even “thought provoked” motion sensors are the next big wave of possibilities for computer communication. As with all new technology, it will be costly at first and hard to find and then suddenly, everywhere. I wouldn’t recommend throwing away every computer mouse you own however- it’s like switching from rotary to wireless phones in the 90s- if the power ever went out, you had to find the plug in phone. Meaning- see what happens, you may not be able to afford the computer monitor that comes with the touch technology. You may have the old retired mouse for another 5- 10 years- which is archaic in technology terms.

Travel Safety and Crime Prevention

There are so many times travelers neglect to consider one of the most important things about traveling, which is SAFETY. Vacationers are usually more focused on having fun and a good time. People on Business Trips are usually thinking more about their project or assignment. Travel Safety is either way on the back burner or completely ignored.

There are several different safety precautions that should be taken when you decide to travel. Before you leave on a trip, protect your home. The house should never look like nobody there. Make sure it looks like someone is living in your home when you are traveling. Keep the blinds and curtains in the same position. Stop your mail and newspapers or make sure that a friend or neighbor will pick them up every day. Set lights on timers to go on at appropriate times. Make sure the grass is cut and snow is shoveled at the regular times. Lock all doors and windows. Activate your alarm. Put a radio and / or a television on a timer and turned up loud. Ask a neighbor to park in your driveway while you are gone.

Plan ahead of time where you are going to stay, how you are going to get there and what you will take with you. Make sure that you have all of the maps and tour books that you need before you leave home.

Money issues are very important when traveling. Clean out your wallet or purse. Get rid of all of the junk. Only take with you what you need. Use credit cards and traveler’s checks as much as possible. Keep credit card numbers and traveler’s check numbers in a safe place. (Also, while you are doing that, it would be a good time to make note of your passport number so if it is lost there will be fewer problems getting a new passport.) Avoid carrying around large amounts of cash. Do not put your wallet in your back pocket. Put your wallet in your front pocket or use a money pouch (money belt) or an ankle wallet or a fanny pack so that your money is in the front of your body, not the back. If you must use a purse, carry it close to your body, holding the top closed and keep it on the front of your body.

Travelers should protect themselves against Identity Theft which is one of the fastest growing crimes of the 21st Century. If you become a victim, it can turn your life into a total disaster. Eventhough anybody can become an Identity Theft victim, travelers are more like huge walking targets with flashing neon light all around them which makes it very easy for them to become Identity Theft victims. Travelers often neglect to take the very basic common sense steps to protect themselves and their families.

As an innocent consumer, it is better to concentrate on PREVENTION rather than risk having to go through the entire stressful, very time consuming and sometimes expensive procedures to recover by clearing your name, correcting your credit report, and trying to recover form someone who has stolen your identity. It is very rare that criminals ever get caught and convicted. According to Federal Trade Commission most cases of Identity Theft cases occur offline. So if their statistics are correct, then you are more at risk of becoming an Identity Theft victim while you are running around form city to city traveling than you do when you are sitting at home using you computer to shop on the internet.

If you book your airline, hotel, car rental or cruise reservations or anything else on the internet (like shopping etc.) and / or especially if you travel around from place to place using your laptop / notebook online, it is extremely important for you to make sure that you have a Firewall on your computer to protect yourself against becoming a victim of Identity Theft.

Pack light. Carrying around large, heavy bulky bags will slow you down and make your more vulnerable to getting robbed. Expensive designer luggage can draw unneeded attention to your belongings. Pack your things in inconspicuous bags. Keep a separate list of all of the contents of your luggage with you. You should put your valuables such as medicine and jewelry in a carry-on bag so they stay with you.

Soft sided luggage is better than hard sided for carry-on because it is easier to squeeze into the tight crammed spaces. Big hard cases will have to be checked in which increases the chances of your luggage being lost. Put a unique marker on your luggage so you can recognize it easily when it comes around on the baggage carousel.

Remove all of your old flight tags. Old flight tags can cause your luggage to be misdirected and lost. Put your identification on the inside and on the outside of all of your luggage. If you are going on a long extended vacation, consider mailing large bulky bags back to your home. If you purchase items from a merchant, ask if they can ship your new purchases back to your home. Never leave your luggage unattended even for a brief moment. Make sure all of your luggage is in plain view.

Take some sanitary wipes with you. You will always need to clean or disinfect something when traveling. Always carry with you at least one bottle of your own drinking water. If you are traveling with a companion, you could consider Cross-Packing just in case the airline looses your luggage, then both of you will still have ½ of the clothes and items you need instead of one person having nothing.

Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid being pickpocketed. Pickpocketers usually work in teams of 2’s or 3’s. One of them will bump into you or drop something in front of you or make a loud noise or do anything to cause a distraction. Once you have been distracted, the other pickpocketer will steal your valuables and walk away.

Try to blend in with the crowd. Do not go out walking around looking like a tourist because it makes you an easy target to be a crime victim. Tourists carry cameras, plane tickets, money, and other valuables. Check maps before you go so you know the directions and you do not look like you are lost. Never discuss your sightseeing schedule in the presence of strangers. When ever possible travel with other people to sightsee and to go shopping. Stick to well lighted areas. Avoid using short cuts in unfamiliar places.

Lock your car - even for short stops. Take your keys with you. Never leave your vehicle running with the keys in the ignition. Close all of the windows. Keep valuables, maps and guidebooks in the trunk or glove compartment so they are out of sight. Do not leave expensive valuables in plain view. Keep them locked in the trunk. Never leave your wallet, credit cards or driver’s license in your vehicle. Always be thinking about protecting yourself against Identity Theft. Take your parking ticket with you. Do not leave the parking ticket in your car. Car thieves know that if they do not have a ticket, then the parking attendant will want to see proof of ownership before allowing them to exit the parking lot. Always check your vehicle before you enter to make sure that nobody is hiding inside.

Write down the year, make, model, color and license number of your car and keep it in a safe place to assist locating your vehicle if it is lost, stolen or impounded. Keep your house and car keys separated in case you have to use valet parking.

Before you leave your car, write down on a note to yourself as to where you are parked. Memory often fails when you are in a different city, that is like a strange place with unusual surroundings OR when returning to your car at the airport in your own city after a long trip.

Do not leave valuables in your hotel room. Use the safe deposit security boxes in the hotel vault. Usually this is either a free or very cheap service. When you are not wearing your jewelry, put it in the hotel vault. When you get to your hotel room, determine the most direct routes to the elevator, stairs and fire escapes.

Use the interior locking device when inside your hotel room for added security. Never automatically open the door. Use the peephole. If it is a hotel employee, ask to see identification. If you are suspicious or have any questions or doubts then call the front desk for verification. Never invite strangers in your room no matter how helpful they may seem.

Always lock you room when you leave, even if just for a minute to go down the hall to get ice. Always pull the door shut by hand. Make sure it is locked. Double check it. If you leave in the evening, turn the lights on and turn on either the radio or television so the room appears to be occupied.

Before you travel, make sure that you have Travel Insurance that meets the needs for you and your family (and / or employees). It should include Emergency Medical Treatment along with other travel protections.

Be sure to take all of the necessary precautions to prevent DVT (blood clots). Deep Vein Thrombosis is a very serious medical condition that can be fatal to travelers. Even young health travelers may be at risks. According to the dvt.net website, “Complications from DVT kill up to 200,000 people a year in the United States which is more than AIDS and breast cancer combined!” Do not just “plant” yourself in your seat for several hours. Move around and stretch. Drink a sufficient amount of water. If possible, stand up and walk around to keep your blood circulating. If you travel with your family, stick together. Keep an eye on the kids at all times. Make sure your kids know where you are staying and what they should do if you get separated. Agree on a meeting place if anybody gets lost. Tell your kids not to accept rides or advice from any strangers.

Finally, have fun and enjoy your trip.

When a friend and ex-colleague suggested that I work out of the house I was ecstatic and wanted to start right away. I did not want to waste a single moment on trivial things like checking on my equipment etc. Hey, technology was not going to faze me! However, dreams and reality rarely match; being a budget conscious home maker, I had decided to start work with my son’s PC that had been around for a while. Well, that wasn’t going to jive; you knew that-right? Keeping a Food Journal is an Excellent Tool to Lose Weight

Advice from The First Lady of Fitness, Fashion, and Fun and Pittsburgh personal trainer, Independent Beachbody Coach, and life coach, Jackie Omotalade:

When you’re trying to lose weight, one of the smartest and easiest steps you can take is to keep a food journal. A food journal is as its name suggests-a notebook in which you record your daily food intake. You can track of a number of things in your food journal or you can keep it simple, but in either case, this is a great way in which to help yourself stick to a weight loss plan.

The Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Health Research conducted a research study to examine the effects of keeping a food dairy with weight loss. They found that food journaling can double a person’s weight loss. Dr. Jack Hollis, lead author of the study, said they found that people lost more weight as they kept more food records.

There are a number of pieces of information you can record in your food diary. First, consider just listing your daily menu. This will help you actually see what you eat on any given day and notice patterns of unhealthy eating that you never considered before. Some like to also record calories, protein, fiber, fat, and other nutrients. Portion size may be recorded as well. If you truly want to use diary format, you can also list the reasons you’re eating other than hunger, the cravings you experience, and your feelings about your diet on any given day. Other things you could include are:

* Time: Time of day you ate this food or drank this beverage.

* Where: What location were you in when you ate.

* Alone or with whom: Were you by yourself or with others.

* Activity: List activities done while eating (watching TV, driving).

* Mood: How were you feeling before, during and after eating?

It’s your diary, so do what is right for you.

When you start a food journal, keep in mind that you can use whatever kind of recording and writing tools you like best. For some people, the traditional journal or just a plain notebook works fine. You can also keep a food journal on your computer. Simply open up a word processing program and keep the icon on your desktop. Others like to use Excel or other data entry programs, which help quiet a lot when it comes to adding totals at the end of the day. You can keep your food diary on a laptop or palm pilot, or slip a notebook into your bag during the day-whatever works best for your lifestyle.

Remember to update your food journal every day and review it at the end of each week in order to track your progress. You may wish to note in your diary when you hit certain weight loss goals or when you gain weight in order to look for causes. You can show your diary to professionals to make sure that you are staying healthy as well. Food diaries work great for many people, so you should consider starting one today in order to lose the most weight possible.

Installing Device Drivers for Bluetooth Devices

July 29, 2009 by admin

We have all seen the futuristic and bulky earpieces sported by many cell phone users. Bluetooth is what enables these users to enjoy hands-free functionality, but how does it actually work? Bluetooth is a wirelessly technology that gives mobile devices the ability to interact over short distances via radio signals. The power of Bluetooth isn’t limited to cell phone usage. The technology also works with computers and a wide range of peripheral devices. Some of the most common types of Bluetooth-enabled hardware include PDAs, printers and GPS devices.

Integrating Bluetooth with Your Computing

The best thing about Bluetooth is that it allows you to integrate various devices implemented with the technology. However, if want to use a Bluetooth-enabled device, such as a PDA on your PC, your computer must be equipped to handle the Bluetooth signal. More of the newer computers offer built-in support for the technology with Bluetooth adapters. If the network adapter isn’t installed on your computer, you could integrate the Bluetooth devices with a dongle. A dongle is a small device that connects to the USB port and delivers the Bluetooth signal to your computer.

Installing the Appropriate Drivers

A special network adapter allows your computer to accept the Bluetooth reception. In order for your computer to recognize the hardware, you will need to install the appropriate device drivers. Whether you are using a network card or dongle, both devices should come included with an installation CD that contains the device drivers you need. Keep in mind that you will have to install the device drivers for each piece of Bluetooth hardware you want to use on your computer. Thus aside from the PDA, for example, you would also need the installation disc for your Bluetooth-enabled printer.

Troubleshooting Problematic Bluetooth Drivers

Just like all computer hardware, there may come a time when your Bluetooth devices endure problems or stop working entirely. This could happen for a number of reasons. Perhaps after installing a new Bluetooth device, the installation overwrites the drivers for an existing device.

Perhaps you uninstalled an application that removed critical files one of your other devices need. Other instances that could ruin your device drivers would be a system crash, an unexpected shutdown or failed hard drive. If you find that your Bluetooth devices are not working properly, the device drivers probably need to be updated.

While you can attempt to reinstall the device drivers from the installation CD, you may want to get the files directly from the manufacturer. This is especially true if the manufacturer has made improvements to enhance functionality.

There are two ways you can check for updates: visit the manufacturer’s website online or perform an automatic search through Windows. To search from the operating system, open the “Control Panel” and select “Device Manager.” Navigate the page, find your Bluetooth device, double-click it, and then lick the “Driver” tab. Next, click “Update Driver” and choose the option that performs an automatic search. If updates are found, simply follow the instructions and install the device drivers.

Tip: If you are using a Bluetooth printer, you must open the Control Panel and select “Printers.” From this window, right-click on your printer, select “Properties,” click the “Advanced” tab, select “New Driver” and follow the prompts for installing the appropriate driver.

Types of Notebooks

There are different types of Notebooks. Each has its own pros and cons. It depends on you which one is best suited for you. Some of the types of notebook are given below

Ultraportable

Ultraportables systems are so light and small that you’ll hardly know they’re in your laptop bag. The smallest ultraportable is sometimes referred to as sub-notebooks having 10-inch displays and confined keyboards.

• 2kg or less

• Less than 20mm thick

• Little displays (12 inches or smaller)

• Slower mobile processors, less memory, and smaller hard drives

• No internal CD, CD-RW, or DVD drives

• Ports are very less

• Microsoft Windows XP Home or Professional

Thin-and-light

A thin-and-light offers the best balance between portability, performance, and features, particularly for business travelers.

• 1.8 to 3kg

• Less than 40mm thick

• Medium sized displays (12 to 14 inches)

• Powerful mobile processors, lots of memory, spacious hard drives

• One exchangeable internal CD, CD-RW, or DVD drive

• All standard ports

• Most of them are compact.

• 12-inch digitized displays

• Same mobile processors, memory, and hard drives found in ultraportables

• No internal CD, CD-RW, or DVD drives

• Fewer ports,

• Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

Rolling Laptop Backpack for Your Laptop Carrying Needs

July 27, 2009 by admin

Laptop Backpacks are a great way to carry a laptop, because they spread the weight out between two shoulders, and because they offer additional security against being snatched off of your shoulder and whisked away by would be thieves.

Even laptop backpacks can be difficult to carry for long periods of time. Though they may spread the weight between two shoulders instead of one, it can still be uncomfortable to have a laptop backpack on your shoulders for several hours during long commutes or while traveling across a large campus.

While standard backpacks may be fine for more casual use, people who carry their computer with them almost everywhere they go may find it very uncomfortable to keep the weight on their shoulders for very long.

This is where rolling backpacks make a great choice. Although they are a bit more expensive than standard backpacks, they offer additional convenience for people who carry their laptop a lot.

Since these backpacks are designed to be used for many purposes, they are often more rugged and durable than standard laptop backpacks. Many people use these rolling backpacks for camping and hiking or as their carry on bags when they fly.

These bags need to be particularly durable to survive being jostled around with other luggage in an overhead compartment or dragged through underbrush while hiking, so they are designed to stand up to this type of use.

Some of the larger rolling backpacks have an especially useful feature. They have detachable day packs that can be used to carry things like a wallet, water bottle, keys, cosmetics, and other items. This could be carried separately when needed, and attached to the main pack only when traveling.

There is one main drawback to using a rolling backpack over a standard laptop backpack notebook. They do actually weight a bit more than standard backpacks because of the added weight of the handle, wheels, and frame. This can be cumbersome if you are traveling in a lot of areas where you cannot roll the backpack, but in urban areas this would not likely be a big problem.

When shopping for a rolling notebook backpack, you will want to look for one that is durable, but also padded. In addition to making it easier to carry, the main function of a laptop bag of any kind is to protect your computer. If your bag is not padded well, its not going to be much protection to your laptop.

You also need to be sure you get a notebook backpack with the best combination of strength and weight. You will probably want something relatively lightweight, especially if you plan to travel in areas where you cannot roll your bag most of the time.

But you do not want to sacrifice a lot of durability to cut down on the weight. Ideally you will find something with a very sturdy handle. Plastic is lighter, but may break easier than metal. You will have to decide whether the strength of metal is worth the added weight.

Other styles of laptop backpack notebook cases can also be found in rolling models, but backpacks are more likely to be allowed as carry on luggage and are also easier to take with you when the terrain is not conducive to rolling.

Small Notebook Computers: Who Are They For And How Do They Compare To Desktops?

Small Notebook Computers are Becoming Increasingly Common

Small notebook computers are the must-have accessory for many college students and business people today. They look cool and are very useful at the same time. Nowadays, many houses are not replete without a mobile wireless notebook computer or two that can be taken all over the house for gaming, homework, email, and even TV and DVD watching. The new influx of smaller notebook computers makes all this easier in that everyone has less weight to tote around. We have learned with cell phones that smaller is not always better, so it is important to know whether or not the small notebook computer you are buying will be able to function in the capacities you require.

In addition, small notebook computers are ideal for those who travel and need to bring their computers with them. A small notebook computer’s edge in both small size and low weight makes it the perfect fit for supreme ease of portability.

Small Notebook Computers Are Smaller and Lighter

To make their overall size smaller, it stands to reason that the components of small notebook computers are much smaller than their desktop or even regular laptop counterparts. Many small notebook computers come with LCD screens that range from ten to eleven inches, although some have screens even smaller than this. Thickness is another factor in a small notebook computer’s overall small-ness. Thicknesses of less than one inch are common in today’s small notebook computer market, which is seeing greater demand than ever.

Many value or desire small notebook computers not only because of their diminutive size, but also because of their significantly lighter weight as compared to regular laptop computers. Small notebook computers tend to range between five and seven pounds, although the lightest model weighs in at a mere three pounds.

Things to Keep in Mind when Considering a Small Notebook Computer

If you are wavering between a small laptop computer and handheld devices such as phones or MP3 players that offer some of their capabilities, keep in mind that screen resolution is far better on computers. This makes browsing the internet, keeping up with email and the like much easier, and in the long run will save you both time and energy.

However, remember that although they are smaller and lighter weight than other laptops, carrying around a small notebook computer still adds weight to your load, especially if you also carry an adapter or an extra battery along with it. In addition, because everything about them is small and light, small notebooks tend to be more fragile than other laptop computers. Also keep in mind that working on a small notebook computer, though vastly easier than trying to perform similar tasks on handheld devices is not quite as convenient as doing them on their larger laptop cousins.

It’s good to know, though, that what small notebook computers may have to sacrifice in durability and ease of use, they make up for in keeping pace with other computers’ hard drive capacities: small notebook computers come with hard drives of 160GB or more. In addition, making sure your small notebook computer is equipped with Bluetooth technology will assure that you’re ready for up-and-coming technology.

Business Travel - the Essentials for a Successfull Trip

July 24, 2009 by admin

Traveling on business today is much different than it was even a few years ago. You must know the essentials now, follow them, and you will make your business trip as painless as possible.

Business Travel Preparations

Wherever you are going on a business trip, you must remember it begins with your preparation. This can be weeks ahead of the trip itself, but you must prepare.

Professional Preparation

Make a professional checklist of what you need to accomplish, by when, and to whom.

If there will be some professional socializing (diners, parties, etc.) you must decide on what you will be wearing, where you will go, and who you will be with.

In addition to you normal business preparations, you must prepare for all eventualities while away from your office and home.

Investigation into Destination Cities

Rules are changing by the minute, and some airlines and some airports have different rules and restrictions than others. You must research well your destination airport and city.

If you are going by air, you have different check-in minimum times, different carry-on allowances and restrictions, and also transport to/from airports.

A bit of investigation will save you trouble, time, and heartache in many cases.

Basic Wardrobe

Do not carry a lot of clothing. You need your basic wardrobe and some leisure items (sports maybe), but make sure that it’s consistent with the local weather conditions, and custom.

Fly Light Fly Right

The days of full carry-on baggage are coming to an end. Some airlines will permit the pilots case in business class, some wont, so be prepared to check your luggage.

Whatever it is, the lighter your fly the better. Chances are you have a notebook computer and accessories, and your business bag, so you will add this to the pre and post flight hand carry items.

If you are flying with a heavy load, you will become tired very quickly, you will be burdened with this extra weight, and chances are you will not need the half of it wherever you are going. Plan ahead.

Airport and Flight Security

Airport security is a necessary evil for the business traveler.

It slows down the whole process, and has modified what you can do, when and where you can do it, and what you can take with you on board (and work with on board).

So wear shoes that come on and off easily, and belts that do the same, or don’t wear a belt.

Don’t keep anything on your person that will slow down the process, including a lot of gadgets. Pack them away if possible, or leave them behind.

Have your identification and tickets at the ready to show when challenged to do so.

In many American airports, even the slightest event can become an issue.

Therefore refrain from talking to anyone except the workers or airline employees, do not joke about anything, and do not leave your hand luggage unattended.

Business travel was never easy, but now it is becoming tedious. So prepare for it, and make the best out of it.

Used Laptops Make Mobile Computing Affordable

Laptop computers have long been a business-class tool with a price that was out of reach for most consumers. Even businesses could not afford to supply all of its employees a top of the line laptop. Prices are now plummeting to the point that almost anyone can afford some sort of laptop or notebook computer without going into debt. This is a boon to many consumers, but students will benefit the most.

In the past to purchase a low cost laptop or notebook, the quality of the device would be sub par or horribly out of date. Now with the wide availability Refurbished Laptops a high quality, relatively new laptop computer can be purchased for oftentimes less than half the new list price. This can mean a good laptop for under $1000.00, and many for less than $500.00.

The speed in which technology is evolving is break neck, and daunting for many businesses and consumers to keep up with. A top of the line computer is less than adequate in 6 months and outdated in a year. While this has been a burden to keep up with, it also means that there are always plenty of used laptops available for sale. Lower income consumers and schools can now afford technology that is only a year out from the manufacturer and is still a viable and powerful tool.

Wireless Internet capabilities are an important reason students need laptops more and more these days. With the power of a desktop computer in a students backpack school work can be done anywhere at any time, and wireless Internet allows the needed research to get homework done fast.
