Nowadays, desktop computer is getting replaced by laptop; it is also called as notebook or notepad and can be easily moved from place to place. It is a small mobile computer which is very much necessary for all the people like businessman, students, teachers and kids. As the necessity of it is being felt more, many companies have started producing more variety of laptops making it tedious for the people to select the right one. Usually a laptop weights two to eighteen pounds, which depends on the size, material and other factors. At the time of purchase of any laptop the basic features emphasized by any customer are its processor type, the storage capacity, screen size, battery type and its longevity, price differences, wireless connectivity and more.

Laptop runs on a single main battery or it can be charged using an external AC adapter and it can also supply power to the computer. In case of power failure the laptop can run for one full day using three volt cell. A laptop is a miniature of desktop and it is capable of many tasks like desktop, but with less power consumption and it can perform all the functions of a desktop, but it is best for mobile use and for efficient power consumption. Compared to Desktop, laptop can perform all the tasks, but t is less powerful, even though if it is of same price. The display of laptops is usually of liquid crystal and the memory models used are different according to the random access memory (RAM). Added to a built in keyboard, a touchpad or trackpad can be used and in addition to that an external keyboard or mouse can be attached.

In early 1970’s, laptop computers were technically viable and matching ideas had been proposed by Alan Kay’s Dynabook concept which was developed at Xerox PARC. But, the first commercially available portable computer was manufactured in 1981, but it was very large and heavy compared to laptops existing today. And the research process keeps on going and so many types of laptops have been designed and manufactured with different configuration. Laptops are energy efficient and are more compact than the desktop as the components are much bigger in the desktops.

As the manufacturers are different and each and every one of them have their own systems and method. Till date there are no firm worldwide standards relating to laptops internal form factors such as supply of electric voltage, motherboards layouts, and internal adapters used to connect the hard disk, optical drive, keyboards, LCD cable, floppy drive etc. Some parts like hard drives and memory are the items that are interchangeable, but motherboards, keyboards and batteries are only interchangeable within the manufacturers brand or model. Physical damages are more likely, compared to desktop, as they are portable and components like batteries, screen hinges, power cords and power jacks might get weakened due to ordinary use. Even though if a liquid spell on to the keyboard it is a minor mistake but it can damage costly components such as motherboard or LCD panel. Dropping a laptop can break the glass LCD screen. In case of failure of motherboard or LCD panel, the repair charges exceed the value of the laptop. These are some of the disadvantages of using Laptop.

A notebook or laptop is nothing but a small portable computer that weighs 2.2 to 18 pounds (1 to 8 kg), that depends on its brand, style, size, material it is made of, and many other factors. Notebooks generally operate on a single main battery or through an external adapter that can both charge the battery and also supply power to the notebook.

Notebooks are adept at performing the same jobs like a personal desktop; the only difference is that they are generally less powerful for the same cost. They consist of similar components like desktop computers and execute the same functions, except that they are miniature in size and suitable for transportable use and effective power consumption. Notebooks usually have LCD and different memory modules. They have a built-in keyboard; input is done through a touchpad or a pointing stick, though an external mouse can also be attached.

There are different categories of notebooks. UMPCs are Ultra-Mobile PCs and are very portable. Since they are of a small size they can fit in a small touch screen while some other models have a minute physical keyboard along with a mouse interface. The other type is Ultraportables which are notebooks and have screens less than eleven inches and have less than 3.7 pounds (1.7 kg) of weight. They are generally used by business travelers, as they are small and light though very expensive. They have an extended battery life and integrated graphics. The other type of notebook is the Sony VAIO FJ76, and Dell XPS M1330 and XPS M1210. Then we have the mainstream notebooks that are more of budget desktops. And if you want desktop power, then you can opt for desktop replacement which can accommodate many performance components.

As far as the processors are concerned you should go for the fastest that your budget will allow. You can opt for Intel`s Centrino that has great speed and also good battery life. Or else you can also go for the economic AMD`s mobile processors whose performance still lags behind Intel. If you intend to watch DVDs on your notebook then go for wide screen ones that offer sharper, larger and great images. The only consideration is that they are not meant for carrying around a lot.

For great system performance it is vital to have enough memory (RAM) that will allow you to run many applications together. Adequate RAM is also essential for image and video editing, graphics work, and 3D gaming. Generally notebooks have a terrible sound quality so it is recommended to use speakers or headphones. These are some of the factors that you need to consider before buying a notebook.

Also keep in mind that like any electronic device, your notebook is vulnerable to accidents as well as system failures. It is recommended to get at least a three year warranty and also some additional insurance.

Health hazards related to using a laptop has been a controversial topic for quite some time. Researches have proved that heat generated from notebooks can raise temperature of scrotum, leading to reduced sperm count. A solution can be using it on a table or keeping it apart from the lap that will enable better cooling of the notebook and also prevent your lap from excessive electromagnetic radiation and heat.

Some of the famous brands that have notebook are Acer that have TravelMate, Ferrari and Aspire models; BenQ; Compaq with its Armada, LTE, EVO and Presario models. Other famous brands are Gateway, HCL, Lenovo, LG, Micro-Star International, Panasonic, Samsung, Toshiba and others.

Notebook or laptop is a small mobile PC used to perform similar tasks done by PCs. A laptop has all the necessary parts of a general personal computer, the monitor, keyboard, CPU, etc. but compact in a much smaller space, done by using a lot of microchips. Since it can be used while on the move; hence, it has got a rechargeable battery inside it. Generally it has a thickness of 1.7 to 4 cm.

The first portable computer, Osborne 1 came in the market in the year 1981.With a small 5“ CRT screen. It was a massive device as compared to the present day laptop. GRiD Compass 1100, was the first laptop which used the clamshell design, produced in 1982. Just the following year the Gavilan SC came in the market, which was the first notebook to use the term laptop.

On the basis of purpose, laptops are generally being classified as follows:

Subnotebook laptops, which have been built keeping the portability, factor in mind. Hence, they are not very big in size and have a maximum of 13“ screen, with less features and ports and quite a long battery life, even as long as 10 hours. They are made by using the latest technology and advanced materials. They generally use the desktop operating systems like Linux, Windows or Mac OSX.

An inferior and smaller version of the Subnotebook is the Netbook laptop, which also keeps portability as the main building feature. They generally have a screen size of 10“ or less. For saving power consumption, some models use SSD drives instead of the normal HDDs. Netbooks are generally used for performing basic office tasks and surfing the net.

Table PCs are laptops having a touch screen interface, with or without a keyboard. They are generally used for performing certain specific functional tasks only.

Desktop replacement laptops keep performance as the major feature over portability and have a screen of 17“, with many ports. They can be called as a miniature form of PC, which can perform almost all the functions of a PC. Generally the batteries of such laptops can supply power for lesser amount of time, as their large sized screen consumes huge amount of power.

Standard laptops are those laptops which keep a balance between the performance and portability. They generally have a 13-15“ screen, having a moderate battery life.

Apple, HP, Dell, Sony, Lenovo, Toshiba, Acer, Panasonic and Samsung are some of the renowned brands manufacturing laptops.

The basic hardware components of a laptop are similar to the desktop`s counterpart, but are miniature variants of the one used in the later. The areas where laptop scores above the normal desktop computers are; they can be used as mobile devices; they can also be used during power cut offs, as they are powered by chargeable battery. Moreover they consume less energy than the usual desktop computers.

However, there are certain disadvantages of laptops too. The major problem being: upgradability, due to the compact design of the laptop. Again due to the compact design, they cannot be cleaned properly and it leads to improper functioning due to accumulation of dust inside. Researchers have shown heat generated from laptop decreases the sperm count in male users.

Though laptops have a few disadvantages, but they are here to stay with us. In a recent market survey the results revealed a rise in laptop sales as compared to the number of PCs sold, in the recent year. Hence, in this twenty first century, we can say we need mobility and laptops are here to meet the bill.

NEC Versa E6150 Review

Notebook now not only as a computer but also for lifestyle and because of that the factor of design now become very important even for notebook makers. Looking on that tendency it was very surprising looking the design of NEC notebook with Fuchia design which already known since 2 years ago. This is seen from the use of plastic material similar with skin on the outside surface of the notebook. Previously, this design looks really unique. But now, in the era of many notebook and electronic devices take glossy theme, the view of this notebook looks a bit outdated. The physical form have rigid look and added with the weight which reach 2.4 kg.

But just like our old man say “do not jugde the book by it’s cover”. Behind of this convensional form, already put high class components on this notebook. Not only using Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 which is the 2nd generation of Centrino processor, NEC also planting nVidia GeForce 9600M into this notebook. The combination of this 2 high class component resulting high perform including when compared with other notebook in the same class such as BenQ S42-LE04but unfortunenately the use of nVidia GeForce 9600M make the battery power can’t stand long.

However, this shortfall can be overcome if you take the advantage of ECO facility that can be accessed via the button at the bottom of the screen. This facility had been made with purpose to make it easier for notebook owner to change the power settings as needed. By pressing this button, i can switch the mode, which marked with the change of the ECO button color and the text on the screen.

However, because Versa E6150 doesn’t have onboard graphic card even you had change the ECO mode but the graphic card that will being used is still GeForce 9600M and this one was differented with BenQ S42-LE04 which instantly changing the use of graphic card to Intel X4500 onboard graphic card when switching to Power Save mode. So in the terms of saving power consumption, Versa E6150 is still less than the BenQ S42.

However there is unique feature on Versa E6150 which cannot be found on others notebook which is Multimedia Touch and Go. This feature is basically using the touchpad as well as shortcut keys. By pressing the button (or more precisely the area) Switch berlambangwith arrows, the touchpad will changed the function into a shortcut key. This shortcut key included with multimedia access (such as Play, Pause, and Volume) and Office (Excel, Word). This feature is quite fun and useful, although you have to learn to touch correctly because i had encountered difficulties when using it for the first time.

With the good performance that this notebook can bring, I really think if NEC Versa E6150 can comes with more stylish design and modern, this notebook will become a perfect notebook for me. But for you which think the design is not a problem, this notebook is very eligible to buy because of the good performance and supported unique feature such as unique Multimedia Touch-and-Go.
